
Tanner Hoops is an American sports commentator who currently covers the University of Minnesota on the Gopher Sports Network and is the play-by-play voice of the Sioux Falls Canaries. In addition to calling professional baseball, Hoops handles play-by-play duties for NCAA Division I basketball, volleyball and hockey and is a postseason honors voter for the Big Ten Conference.
A native of Storm Lake, Iowa, Hoops graduated from Buena Vista University in 2018 with a Bachelor of Arts in Digital Media. He then joined the Duluth Huskies of the Northwoods League as a play-by-play broadcaster and was on the call for the 2018 Summer Collegiate World Series.
After one season in Duluth, Hoops was named sports director at ESPN Radio Upper Peninsula in Marquette, Michigan. In addition to various play-by-play assignments, he hosted the station’s afternoon drive show The SportsPen.
Hoops accepted a front office role with the United States Hockey League’s Sioux City Musketeers in September 2020 before founding Home Team Communications, a sports media business spotlighting Buena Vista County (Iowa) athletics.
Hoops has been with Learfield's Gopher Sports Properties since September 2021 as the radio play-by-play voice for University of Minnesota volleyball, Golden Gopher football and men's hockey studio host and fill-in broadcaster for men's and women's basketball broadcasts. He is also affiliated with Minnesota News Network as a Minnesota Vikings correspondent.
In April 2022, Hoops was tabbed as the play-by-play voice of the American Association’s Sioux Falls Canaries.
Hoops has covered notable events including multiple NCAA tournaments, the Big Ten Conference men’s and women’s basketball tournaments, the NBA playoffs, NHL Kraft Hockeyville and various high school state championships.
